中國有笑話書的歷史由來已久，但集大成者可說非《笑林廣記》莫屬。此書作者「遊戲主人」編成，遊戲主人並不是指一個人而是清代的一批文人一起編寫而成的《笑林廣記》可算是嚴格意義上的笑話集，語言風趣，文字簡練雋秀，表現手法也十分成熟。
